Johnny Cash dog den 12 september 2003. Månaderna innan hans död spelade han in nytt material tillsammans med producenten Rick Rubin. Albumet ""American V: A hundred highways"" innehåller låtar skrivna av låtskrivare som Hank Williams, Rod McKuen, Bruce Springsteen, Don Gibson m fl. Dessutom innehåller albumet två låtar skrivna av Cash själv varav låten ""Like the 309"" var den sista låt han skrev och spelade in.
